Ten e-commerce brands, 24,062 AI citations, and one finding that complicates the GEO pitch.

In short. Organic traffic predicts AI citations better than domain authority does (rank correlation +0.75 against +0.48). The correlation is still loose enough that Triple Whale earns 71% more citations than Rebuy on 45% less traffic. Every site we checked already allows every major AI crawler, and the one site publishing FAQ schema on its homepage ranks 8th of 10.

We counted how often ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Copilot cite ten brands in the Shopify ecosystem, then tested the four things GEO checklists usually tell you to fix. The data and the method are both below, including the parts that did not support our own pitch.

    The data

    Every number we measured.

Ranked by AI citations. The last column compares each brand's citation rank against its organic traffic rank, which is the closest thing here to a pure GEO score.

AI citations, domain rating, organic traffic and agent-readiness signals for ten e-commerce SaaS brands, measured 9 September 2026.

DR is Ahrefs Domain Rating. Organic traffic is the Ahrefs monthly estimate. AI citations count citation links across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot. A positive "vs traffic" figure means the brand is cited more than its search traffic would predict. All figures measured 9 September 2026.

    What the data says

Six findings, including the ones we did not want.

    01

Organic traffic predicts AI citations better than authority does

Across the ten brands, the rank correlation between monthly organic traffic and AI citation count is +0.75. For Domain Rating it is +0.48. Anyone selling GEO as a discipline unrelated to SEO is arguing against the data. The pages that already earn search traffic are the ones AI engines quote most.

    Evidence: Spearman rank correlation, n=10.

    02

Strong is not the same as deterministic, and the gap is the whole opportunity

Triple Whale earns 1,440 citations from 19,201 monthly organic visits. Rebuy earns 844 from 35,095. That is 71% more citations from 45% less traffic. Loop Returns outranks Triple Whale on both Domain Rating (86 to 77) and organic traffic, and gets roughly half the citations. Traffic buys you a starting position, not the citation.

Evidence: Triple Whale vs Rebuy and Loop Returns, measured same day.

    03

Crawler blocking was not the constraint in this category

All ten sites allow GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and Bingbot at the site root. The 'check your robots.txt' step that opens most GEO checklists found nothing to fix here. It is still worth checking, but in this category it is a five-minute task, not a strategy.

Evidence: robots.txt parsed for all seven agents on all ten domains.

    04

Homepage schema did not separate the leaders from the laggards

Loop Returns is the only brand in the set publishing FAQPage schema on its homepage, and it sits 8th of 10 on citations. Triple Whale publishes no homepage JSON-LD at all and sits 4th. Schema helps a machine parse a page it has already decided to read. It does not appear to be what makes the engine choose the page.

Evidence: JSON-LD extracted from each homepage.

    05

llms.txt tracks with citations, but we cannot show it causes them

The six sites serving a working llms.txt hold citation ranks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8. The four without hold 6, 7, 9 and 10. That looks decisive until you notice the obvious confounder: teams that ship an llms.txt are usually the teams already investing in content and docs. Loop Returns publishes one and still ranks 8th, so it is not sufficient by itself. We are reporting the association and explicitly not claiming the mechanism.

Evidence: llms.txt fetched and validated (HTML shells rejected) on all ten domains.

    06

Two of the ten had migrated domains, and the old domain still reads as near-zero

Our first pass measured rechargepayments.com and attentivemobile.com, both of which now redirect. On the old domains the reading was 12 and 81 citations. On the live domains it is 1,804 and 873. If you audit a brand that has moved, confirm which hostname the citations actually point at before you conclude anything.

Evidence: 301 redirects verified; both brands re-measured on the destination domain.

    How we did it

Method, and what this study cannot tell you.

A study you cannot check is a claim, not evidence. Everything needed to reproduce or contradict this is here.

    Method

    1. 1Pick the ten brands and confirm the canonical domain for each, following redirects before measuring anything.
    2. 2Pull citation counts per platform from the Ahrefs site-explorer ai-responses-count endpoint in subdomains mode, plus Domain Rating and organic traffic for the same target and date.
    3. 3Run scripts/ai-readiness-probe.mjs to fetch robots.txt, llms.txt and the homepage for each domain, evaluating each AI crawler against the robots rules and extracting JSON-LD types.
    4. 4Rank brands on each metric and compute Spearman rank correlations against citation count.
    5. 5Record the date on every figure and append the next reading as a new snapshot instead of overwriting this one.

Crawlers evaluated: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, Bingbot.

    Limitations

    • n = 10, one category (e-commerce SaaS), one snapshot taken on 2026-09-09. This establishes direction, not population estimates.
    • Citation counts come from the Ahrefs AI citation index, which samples AI answers rather than observing every one. Treat any single reading as directional and expect movement between pulls.
    • A rank correlation over 10 items carries a wide confidence interval. The +0.75 figure should be read as 'strong association in this sample', not as a stable coefficient.
    • We measured domains, not companies. A brand mentioned in an AI answer without a link does not appear in these counts, so this understates visibility for brands that get named more than they get linked.
    • Association is not causation anywhere in this study. We did not run an intervention, so nothing here shows that adding a file or a schema block changes an outcome.

We will measure your brand and your closest competitors across the same six AI platforms, using the same method, and send you the table. If the answer is that you are already winning, we will tell you that too.
