Advertising inside AI assistants moved from test to product in six months. OpenAI began its pilot on 9 February 2026 and by early July ads appeared in 51% of US ChatGPT replies. Google shows ads in 25.5% of its AI results. Ads sit below the generated answer and do not change it, which means the recommendation inside the answer is still earned, not bought. That position has become more valuable, not less.
AI assistant advertising is the practice of showing paid, labelled placements inside a conversational AI product such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode or Microsoft Copilot. On every platform that currently sells it, the paid unit appears outside the generated answer rather than within it, and the platform states that it does not alter the answer produced.
- ChatGPT ads launched on 9 February 2026 and reached 51% of US replies by 3 July 2026.
- Delivery is unstable. It fell from 49.1% on 26 May to 0.05% on 14 June, then recovered within three weeks.
- Ads run only on the Free and Go tiers. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts see none.
- Google shows ads in 25.5% of AI results. Perplexity removed advertising in February 2026. Claude offers none.
- No platform sells placement inside the generated answer, so being named there remains earned.
- 63% of US adults say ads in AI search reduce their trust in the results.

What happened with ChatGPT ads in 2026?
OpenAI confirmed in January 2026 that it would test advertising in ChatGPT. The pilot went live on 9 February 2026 for logged-in adult users in the United States on the Free and Go tiers. Paid tiers were excluded and remain so. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users see no ads.
Three design choices matter more than the launch itself. Ads appear as a labelled block below the generated answer, not inside it. OpenAI states that ads do not change the answer the model produces. And targeting is contextual, based on the live query, rather than behavioural profiling built from conversation history.
The major agency groups moved quickly. Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis and WPP all committed, with technical integrations from Adobe, Criteo, Kargo, Pacvue and StackAdapt. Early advertisers included Best Buy, Target, Lowe's and VistaPrint. By late March, more than 600 advertisers were participating, and around 80% of the small and medium businesses among them said they intended to continue.

How often do ChatGPT ads actually appear?
The headline number hides how uneven delivery has been. Independent monitoring measured ads in 0.42% of responses across a window from mid-April to early May. By 26 May that had reached 26.5% overall and 49.1% in the United States. On 14 June it fell to 0.05%, which is close to a full stop. Delivery restarted on 26 June and reached 51% of US replies by 3 July. OpenAI has not explained the pause publicly.

Share of responses carrying at least one paid placement
Why this matters: a channel that can fall from 49% to 0.05% in three weeks is not yet a channel you can plan a quarter around. Earned citations do not switch off when a platform adjusts its inventory settings.
Which countries see ChatGPT ads?
Ads now run in seven countries: the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea and the United Kingdom. Delivery rates differ sharply between them. For the seven days ending 3 July 2026, monitoring recorded 51.0% in the United States, 53.6% in Canada, 49.8% in Australia and 18.8% in Japan. Germany, France, Brazil, Israel and the United Arab Emirates recorded no ad delivery at all, which pulled the global average down to 12.2%.

Where does the ad sit in a reply?
This is the detail that decides your strategy. The paid unit is a sponsored card placed underneath the answer. The answer above it is produced by the model from sources it retrieved and judged. You cannot buy your way into that part. A competitor can, however, buy the space directly below an answer that recommends you.

What is earned and what is bought
Which AI assistants show ads in 2026?
| Platform | Ad status | Format and pricing | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Live on Free and Go, seven markets | Sponsored card below the answer. Roughly $3 to $5 per click, or $25 to $45 per thousand impressions | Paid tiers see nothing, so B2B buyers often sit outside the ad audience |
| Google AI Mode and AI Overviews | Live, 25.5% of AI results | Cost per click, with shopping ads and direct offers inside AI Mode | Largest reach, familiar buying model, tied to existing Google Ads accounts |
| Microsoft Copilot | Live | Cost per click through Microsoft Advertising | Smaller volume, useful in Windows and Office contexts |
| Amazon Rufus | Live | Sponsored product placements | Retail intent only, tied to the Amazon catalogue |
| Perplexity | Removed, February 2026 | None. Now subscription funded | Only earned citation is possible here |
| Claude | No advertising offered | None | Only earned citation is possible here |
Perplexity is the instructive case. It launched sponsored follow-up questions in November 2024, stopped accepting new advertisers by October 2025, and removed advertising entirely in February 2026, citing user trust. It now aims for $500m in annual subscription revenue and markets itself as the option without ads. Two of the six major assistants have decided that ads are not worth the cost to user confidence.
How much money is in AI search advertising?
The commercial case is not in doubt. OpenAI reported $100m in annualised advertising revenue within roughly six weeks of the US launch. Forecasts put US AI search advertising at $1bn in 2025 rising to $25.9bn by 2029, which would be 13.6% of all search advertising spend.

Do ads reduce trust in AI answers?
Advertising inside an assistant carries a cost that search ads never did. An Ipsos survey found that 63% of US adults say ads in AI search results make them trust those results less. People use assistants because they expect a recommendation rather than a list. A sponsored unit sitting under that recommendation raises a question the user did not have before.
This has a practical consequence. If ads reduce confidence in the surrounding page, then the unpaid recommendation inside the answer gains relative weight. The name the assistant chooses to say is the one the user is most likely to act on.
What AI assistant ads mean for your visibility
Four conclusions follow from the data above, and none of them require you to buy anything.
The answer is still earned. No platform currently sells placement inside the generated response. Being named there comes from retrieval and citation, which we covered in how AI search engines choose what to cite.
Your best customers may never see an ad. Ads run only on Free and Go tiers. Business, Enterprise and Education accounts are excluded. If you sell to companies, a large part of your audience sits on the ad-free side of the product.
Ad inventory moves, citations persist. Delivery fell from 49% to 0.05% in three weeks with no notice. A citation earned through content coverage does not behave that way.
The risk is a competitor under your recommendation. When an assistant names you and a rival buys the slot below, the reply becomes a comparison. Your defence is not a bigger ad budget. It is being named more often, across more of the questions your buyers ask.
Six things to do now
| Action | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Check whether ads run on your priority questions | Ask your top twenty buying questions on a free ChatGPT account and record what appears below each answer |
| Record who is buying under your answers | The advertiser pool has rotated at least twice since May, so a single check is not enough |
| Measure how often you are named in the answer | This is the position no competitor can buy from you |
| Extend coverage to the sub-questions | Assistants split one question into several, so coverage decides how often you can be cited |
| Keep your product and pricing facts current everywhere | Assistants compare sources for agreement, and old figures on third-party pages weaken your citation |
| Track the platforms with no ads separately | On Perplexity and Claude, earned citation is the only route in |

Frequently asked questions
Do ads change the answer ChatGPT gives?
OpenAI states that they do not. Ads appear as a separate labelled block below the response. This means a competitor can place an ad under an answer that recommends you, but cannot replace the recommendation itself.
Can you pay to be recommended inside an AI answer?
No. On every platform that carries ads, the paid unit sits outside the generated answer and is labelled. Being named inside the answer comes from the retrieval and citation process.
Should we buy AI assistant ads or work on visibility first?
They do different jobs and are not substitutes. Ads can reach questions where you are not yet named. Earned citations reach every tier and every user, including the paid accounts that see no ads, and they stay in place between campaigns. Most teams should establish citation coverage first and treat paid placement as an addition.
Which assistants carry no advertising?
Perplexity removed ads in February 2026. Claude does not offer advertising. On both, earned citation is the only way to appear.
