Reddit Is the Most Cited Source in AI Answers: What That Means for Your Brand

Across every major study, a forum outranks encyclopedias, news publishers and brand websites as the source AI engines quote most. Here is the data on which communities get cited, what format works, and where the legal line sits.

    The short answer

Reddit is the single most cited domain across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, at roughly 40% of aggregate citation frequency. Engines favour it because threads contain first-person experience in a question and answer format. You cannot buy or fake your way in. Coordinated posting breaches Reddit policy and United States law. What works is open participation, useful contributions, and giving communities accurate information to discuss.

Community citation means an AI engine using a forum thread, review site or discussion board as a source when it composes an answer. It differs from a link in search results because the engine reads the discussion, extracts an opinion from it, and presents that opinion as part of its recommendation.

    Key takeaways
    • Reddit ranks first across five major engines in an analysis of 30 million cited sources.
    • Reliance differs sharply by engine: 46.7% of Perplexity citations, about 21% on Google AI Overviews, 0.1% on Gemini.
    • Up to 80% of cited threads have fewer than 20 upvotes. Popularity is not the trigger.
    • The average cited post is around 900 days old, so old threads still shape current answers.
    • Long answer comments of 300 to 600 words with named experience and specific figures are cited most.
    • Fake accounts and paid upvotes breach Reddit policy and carry FTC civil penalties above $53,000 per violation.

Which sources do AI engines cite most?

An analysis of 30 million directly cited sources ranked Reddit first across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews. A separate index built from more than 680 million citations put Reddit at roughly 40% of multi-engine aggregate citation frequency, with Wikipedia second and YouTube third. A study of 150,000 citations found Reddit appearing in 40.1% of cases, against 26.3% for Wikipedia and 23.5% for YouTube. Those shares overlap, because one answer can cite several domains.

The pattern holds across independent datasets using different methods. Together, Reddit, Wikipedia, YouTube, LinkedIn and Forbes plus ten more sources account for around 68% of all citations the major engines produce.

Why do AI engines cite Reddit so heavily?

Three reasons, and only the first is about content quality.

The format matches the question. A Reddit thread is a question followed by answers from people describing what happened when they tried something. When a user asks an assistant which tool to buy, that is exactly the shape of evidence the model needs. A product page states claims. A forum thread contains outcomes.

Engines look for agreement between sources. As covered in how AI search engines choose what to cite, a model compares passages and gives weight to points that several independent sources support. A thread with twenty replies contains that agreement inside one page.

Access is licensed. Google pays a reported $60 million a year for Reddit data, and OpenAI signed its own agreement. These engines have reliable, permitted access to the full corpus, which many other sources do not grant.

What this means: your customers' unprompted descriptions of your product are now a ranking input. The gap between what you claim and what users report is no longer just a reputation issue. It is a visibility issue.

Which AI engines rely on Reddit most?

This is the finding most teams miss. Reddit's share of citations is not uniform. Perplexity leans on it hardest at 46.7% of citations. Google AI Overviews sits at about 21%. ChatGPT accounted for just over 5% of its citations from Reddit in January 2026. Google Gemini recorded 0.1% in the same period.

    0% 15% 30% 45% 46.7% Perplexity 21% AI Overviews Google 5.0% ChatGPT 0.1% Gemini
Measurements come from different studies and windows, so treat the ordering as reliable and the precise values as approximate.

The practical consequence is that a company monitoring only its Gemini presence could see no community influence at all, while ChatGPT builds its product evaluation from subreddit threads written three years ago. Monitoring one engine tells you about one engine.

What kind of Reddit content gets cited?

An internal study of more than 10,000 Reddit citations across four engines over 90 days found a consistent profile. The most cited format is a long answer comment of roughly 300 to 600 words that names the writer's own experience, includes specific figures, and carries around 50 or more upvotes.

Two findings run against instinct. Up to 80% of AI-cited threads have fewer than 20 upvotes, and the average cited post is about 900 days old. Engines are not chasing what is popular or recent. They are looking for a settled, detailed account that other sources agree with.

The profile of a cited Reddit post

What the citation data indicates, against what marketers usually optimise for

COMMONLY ASSUMED Viral post, high upvotes Published recently Short and punchy Top-level post Large general subreddit WHAT THE DATA SHOWS Under 20 upvotes in 80% of cases Around 900 days old on average 300 to 600 word answers Reply comments, not just posts Specific niche communities
Detail and specificity matter more than reach. This is why paid amplification does not produce citations.

Which subreddits do AI engines cite?

Reddit is not one source. It is more than 100,000 active communities, and engines do not cite them evenly. For business software questions, five communities account for roughly 35% of Reddit-sourced citations: r/SaaS, r/marketing, r/entrepreneur, r/smallbusiness and r/startups.

Your category will have its own concentration, and it is usually narrower than expected. The work is to find which specific communities appear when engines answer your buyers' questions, rather than assuming the largest subreddit is the relevant one.

    Compliance warning

Manufacturing the appearance of independent recommendation is not an aggressive tactic. It is a breach of platform policy and, in the United States, a breach of federal law.

The FTC's rule on consumer reviews and testimonials, finalised on 14 August 2024 as 16 CFR Part 465, allows civil penalties reported at more than $53,000 per fake review or deceptive post. Reddit's content policy separately prohibits secondary accounts, coordinated upvoting and paid amplification, and the platform runs behavioural detection systems for exactly this. A single campaign can produce both a platform ban and a regulatory inquiry.

There is a practical cost too. When a community identifies coordinated promotion, the resulting complaint threads tend to rank for brand searches and then feed the same AI answers you were trying to influence. The failure mode is not a wasted budget. It is a durable negative citation.

How can a brand use Reddit properly?

Legitimate community presence involves real accounts, disclosed relationships and contributions that are useful whether or not anyone buys from you. Six practices that fit within both Reddit's rules and the FTC framework:

    PracticeHow to do it properly
Participate under a disclosed identityState your role when you comment on anything touching your category. Reddit's culture penalises concealment more than promotion.
Respect the 90/10 guidelineReddit expects self-promotional content to stay a small minority of your activity, commonly cited as no more than 10%. Individual subreddits set stricter rules in their sidebars.
Answer questions you can answer wellThe cited format is a detailed answer with specifics. Contribute where you have real operating knowledge, including where the honest answer is that your product is not the right fit.
Correct factual errors about youIf a thread contains outdated pricing or a feature that has changed, reply openly with the correction. This is permitted, useful and directly improves what engines read.
Give communities accurate materialPublish clear specifications, pricing and comparisons on your own site so that people discussing you have correct information to work from.
Use Reddit's advertising product for paid reachPaid placement is labelled, permitted and carries none of the compliance risk of organic manipulation. Keep it separate from community participation.

None of this produces a citation next week. Given that the average cited post is about 900 days old, community presence is a slow asset, which is precisely why competitors cannot buy it quickly either.

How do you fix an inaccurate AI answer?

Many brands discover community citation through a negative answer. An engine reports a limitation that was fixed a year ago, or quotes a complaint about a pricing model you have since changed.

The route is correction, not removal. Reply on the original thread with accurate current information and a date. Publish the corrected facts on your own site where engines can retrieve them independently. Then re-test the prompt after a few weeks. Where several sources disagree, engines tend to follow the weight of evidence, so adding accurate sources works better than trying to delete inaccurate ones.

Which other community sources get cited?

Social sources as a whole reached roughly 9% of AI citations by January 2026, and Reddit is the largest part of that. The same logic applies to other places where people describe direct experience: YouTube reviews, LinkedIn discussion, Stack Overflow, G2 and Trustpilot, specialist forums, and Q&A threads in your industry.

The common factor is first-person experience that can be checked against other sources. Wherever your buyers discuss your category in that form, engines are likely reading it.

    Frequently asked questions

Why do AI engines cite Reddit so often?

Threads contain first-person accounts in a question and answer structure, which matches what a model needs for recommendation prompts. Google and OpenAI also hold licensing agreements giving them permitted access to the data.

How much of AI citations come from Reddit?

Estimates vary by study and engine. An analysis of 30 million cited sources ranked Reddit first across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews. Aggregate multi-engine estimates put Reddit at roughly 40% of citation frequency. Perplexity leans hardest on it at 46.7%, Google AI Overviews at about 21%, and Google Gemini at only 0.1%.

Can a brand post on Reddit to get cited by AI?

A brand can participate openly with a disclosed identity where it has something useful to add. It cannot manufacture independent-looking recommendation. Secondary accounts, paid posters and coordinated upvoting breach Reddit policy and the FTC rule on consumer reviews.

Do you need a viral Reddit post to be cited?

No. Up to 80% of AI-cited Reddit threads have fewer than 20 upvotes, and the average cited post is around 900 days old. Engines appear to favour settled, detailed discussion over recent popularity.

What kind of Reddit content gets cited most?

Analysis of more than 10,000 Reddit citations found that long-form answer comments of roughly 300 to 600 words, carrying named experience, specific figures and around 50 or more upvotes, were the most cited format across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.

What if an AI answer repeats outdated criticism of us?

Correct it at the source. Reply on the thread with current, dated information, publish the same facts on your own site, then re-test the prompt after a few weeks. Where sources disagree, engines tend to follow the weight of evidence, so adding accurate sources works better than trying to remove inaccurate ones.
