Why GEO Needs Multi-Country Tracking: AI Answers Change by Market

Ask ChatGPT the same software question from Canada and from the United States and the two answers share 24% of their cited domains. Ask it from France and from Sweden and they share 4%. Across twelve countries and four engines, Temso's early-2026 analysis of more than a million citations found that fewer than one in ten cited domains is shared between any two countries on average. A brand tracking its AI visibility from one location, in one language, is measuring one cell of a matrix and reporting it as the whole. This article sets out the evidence from four studies, the reasons the answers diverge, which categories it affects most, and how to track per market.

    The short answer

Multi-country AI visibility tracking is running a localized prompt set for each market a brand sells in, from an in-country location, in the local language, on every engine that matters there, and reporting citation rate and competitors per market rather than as one global number. It is necessary because the engines do not return one answer with local decoration; they return different answers built from different sources. Cited-domain overlap between countries averages 6.7% to 18.8% depending on the engine. Local-country domains make up 21% to 42% of citations in most non-US markets and under 1% in the US. The same market shows local citation shares from 16.6% to 51.7% depending on which engine is asked. A brand that is cited in the US and assumes it is cited in Germany has no evidence for that, and the studies below say it is probably wrong. LaCleo GEO, our AI visibility platform, is built on this principle: every tracked question is asked separately from each of 37 countries in 25 languages, across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity.

The question has become urgent because tracking has become cheap and single-market. Most teams that set up an AI visibility tracker in 2025 did so for one country, usually the US, because that is where the tools defaulted and where the English-language prompt sets were written. The tool comparison on this blog treated country coverage as one column among many. The evidence published since then says it should be the first question, and this article is the correction.

    Key takeaways

    • Cross-border overlap is low on every engine. Average shared cited domains between countries: Copilot 6.7%, AI Overviews 7.9%, ChatGPT 9.5%, Grok 18.8% (Temso, 1M+ citations, 12 countries).
    • Language is the larger driver, location the second. Same-language country pairs share 14% to 25% of domains; cross-language pairs 5.5% to 18%. Profound's 3.25 billion citation study found Spanish prompts produce 1.4 times the English social-citation rate in AI Overviews and 0.5 times in ChatGPT wherever the query originates.
    • Local domains carry a third of citations outside the US. Country-code domains make up 42% of cited sources in the Netherlands, 39% in France, 31% in the UK, and 0.6% in the US.
    • Engines disagree within the same market. In Brazil, Gemini cites local domains 51.7% of the time, AI Mode 27.5%, ChatGPT 41.3% (Aleyda Solis, October 2026).
    • Category decides how much it matters. Personal finance reaches 78.7% local citations in Brazil; B2B software sits at 10.5% to 15.9% everywhere, and still shows under 10% cross-border overlap.
    • Within one country and language, variation is small except where law and institutions are local: SE Ranking found 47% of queries produced identical domain sets across five US cities, and the 6% with zero overlap were concentrated in legal, healthcare and real estate.

What is multi-country AI visibility tracking?

Multi-country AI visibility tracking is the practice of measuring whether, and how, a brand is cited in AI answers separately for each country and language it sells in, with prompts written for that market and requests issued from inside it. It differs from single-market tracking in three ways. The prompt set is localized rather than translated: a German buyer asking about CRM software does not ask the German version of the American question; they ask a different question, naming different products, regulations and price points. The request location is set per market, because engines use it to decide which index results and local sources to retrieve. And the report is per market, because the competitor cited instead of you in France is not the competitor cited instead of you in Japan.

The term covers Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, where results have always been location-dependent, and the assistants, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot, where the dependency is newer and less understood. The LLM SEO article covers why the assistants retrieve from different indexes; this article is about what happens when the same assistant is asked the same thing from two places.

    The evidence: four studies

Four independent measurements, published between April 2025 and October 2026, point the same way with different methods. They are summarized here in order of scale, with the vendor-published ones labelled.

Temso: one million citations, twelve countries, four engines

Bar chart of the share of AI citations from local-country domains: Netherlands 42%, France 39%, Australia 36%, Germany 34%, United Kingdom 31%, Mexico 21%, Canada 21%, United States 1%; source Temso AI, early 2026
Country-code domains as a share of cited sources. Everywhere except the US, a third or more of what the engines cite is local. Source: Temso AI, early 2026, vendor data.

Temso, an AI search analytics vendor, measured more than one million citations in six software categories (CRM, cybersecurity, marketing automation, data analytics, collaboration tools, AI agents) across twelve countries and seven languages on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot and Grok in early 2026, using Jaccard similarity of cited domains for every country pair. No prompt named a location. The average overlap was 6.7% on Copilot, 7.9% on AI Overviews, 9.5% on ChatGPT and 18.8% on Grok, which produces roughly eight times more citations per response. The highest ChatGPT pair was Canada and the US at 23.9%; the lowest, France and Sweden at 3.6%. France's average overlap with every other country was about half the overall mean. Country-code domains made up 42.1% of cited sources in the Netherlands, 39.1% in France, 36.3% in Australia, 33.9% in Germany, 31.4% in the UK, 21.0% in Mexico, 20.8% in Canada and 0.6% in the US, where .com sites made up 79.5% of sources. This is vendor research without published sample sizes per country; the direction is corroborated by the three studies that follow.

Profound: 3.25 billion citations, fourteen countries, seven models

Profound's March 2026 analysis covered 3.25 billion citations across ChatGPT, Claude, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity in fourteen countries, counting a prompt only when written in the country's native language. Its subject was social citations, and the finding is that language changes the source mix, not only its volume. ChatGPT's social citation rate drops from about 10% in English markets to 3% to 5% in non-English ones, because Reddit is 51% to 76% of ChatGPT's social citations in every country measured and Reddit is an English-first platform. In Google AI Overviews the effect runs both ways: Spanish prompts produce 1.4 times the English social rate, Swedish and Arabic almost none. The platform mix changes too. In English-language AI Overviews, YouTube is 38% of social citations and Reddit 21%; in Portuguese, YouTube is 65% and Reddit 7%; in Arabic, Instagram is 29% and YouTube 26%. The Reddit citation article on this blog describes a US pattern; Profound's data says it is a US pattern.

Aleyda Solis: UK, Spain and Brazil, ten topics, three Google-adjacent engines

In October 2026, international SEO consultant Aleyda Solis published a comparison of ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode across the UK, Spain and Brazil using one prompt library localized for each market across ten topics, measuring local citations by country-code domain. Local share of all citations was 41.4% in Brazil, 38.3% in the UK and 24.0% in Spain. Within a single market the engines disagreed widely: in Brazil, Gemini cited local domains 51.7% of the time, ChatGPT 41.3% and AI Mode 27.5%; in Spain, 16.6%, 24.8% and 22.6%. Overlap with US results at domain level ranged from 20.1% (Gemini, Brazil) to 60.6% (ChatGPT, UK); at exact page level, AI Mode's overlap with US results was 5.7% in the UK, 2.0% in Spain and 1.7% in Brazil. The study notes that country-code domains undercount local sources published on .com, so these are floors.

SE Ranking: five US cities, 100,013 keywords, one language

The control case. SE Ranking ran 100,013 English keywords across twenty niches against Google AI Overviews from Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New York and Washington DC on April 15, 2025. Appearance rate, answer length and citation counts were within one percentage point across all five. 47.05% of queries produced identical domain sets in all five cities, and 6.34% produced zero overlap, concentrated in legal, healthcare and real estate, where the exclusive domains were state bar associations, city government sites and local health systems. Within one country and one language, location matters where institutions are local and little elsewhere. Across countries and languages, as the three studies above show, it matters almost everywhere.

Why AI answers diverge by market

Four mechanisms, each with measured evidence, and they compound.

    1. The request location changes the retrieval. Google has always localized results by the searcher's location, and AI Overviews and AI Mode inherit that. The assistants that retrieve through Bing, Brave or their own indexes also receive the request's location and use it. SE Ranking's legal, healthcare and real estate results are this mechanism operating inside one country.
    2. The query language changes the candidate set. An engine retrieving for a German prompt retrieves German-language passages, which come from different domains than English ones. Temso measured the effect of language on overlap at Cohen's d above 3.3, which is a very large effect; same-language pairs shared 14% to 25% of domains, cross-language pairs 5.5% to 18%.
    3. Local institutions anchor regulated categories. Finance, health and legal answers cite regulators, government bodies and public services, and those are different in every country. Solis found institutional sources made up 31% of ChatGPT's local citation weight in the UK, 46% in Spain and 33% in Brazil.
    4. Each engine weights these differently. AI Mode's local share varied least across Solis's three markets (22.6% to 27.5%); Gemini's varied most (16.6% to 51.7%). A tracker that reads one engine as a proxy for the others will misread the others.

    Language vs location

Infographic of ChatGPT cited-domain overlap between country pairs: highest Canada and US 24%, Argentina and Spain 20%, Australia and Canada 19%; lowest France and Sweden 4%, France and Canada 4%, France and Italy 5%; average 9.5%; source Temso AI, early 2026
Shared language raises overlap; a different language lowers it; and even the best pair shares under a quarter of its sources. Source: Temso AI, early 2026, vendor data.

Both matter; language matters more; and neither can be substituted for the other. The clean comparison is in Temso's country pairs. The three highest-overlap pairs all share a language: Canada and the US (23.9%), Argentina and Spain (19.8%), Australia and Canada (19.0%). The lowest pairs all cross one: France and Sweden (3.6%), France and Canada (4.1%), France and Italy (4.7%). English-speaking market pairs averaged 19.0% overlap; the three southern European pairs averaged 6.7%. Profound's finding that Spanish prompts produce the same social-citation multiples "regardless of where the query originates" is the same conclusion from the other side: language sets the pattern, location adjusts it.

The practical consequence is that neither shortcut works. Tracking the US and assuming it covers the UK, Canada and Australia leaves three quarters of each market's citations unmeasured. Tracking in English from one location with translated prompts measures how an engine answers a foreign-language question asked from the wrong place, which is not a question any buyer asks. A market is a language, a location and a set of engines together, and the prompt set has to be built for that combination.

B2B software and SaaS14.3%10.5%15.9%Least localized by domain, yet Temso found under 10% cross-border overlap in the same category

"High" and "Moderate" indicate the study's ranking where it did not publish the exact figure. Legal, healthcare and real estate are the categories SE Ranking found most location-sensitive within the US.

The software row deserves attention because it is the counterintuitive one. B2B SaaS is the least locally cited category by domain type, which a team might read as permission to track one market. Temso's study was software-only, and it still found that two countries share fewer than one in ten cited domains. The sources are global .com sites, but which global sites get cited changes by country. Low local share does not mean high overlap.

How to set it up: the tracking matrix

Grid of engines (ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude) by markets (US English, UK English, Germany German, Brazil Portuguese), cells shaded by citation status, caption: one localized prompt set per row, run from an in-country location
The unit of tracking is a cell: one market, one engine, one localized prompt set. The report is the whole grid. Illustrative layout, not measured results.
    1. Choose markets by revenue, not by language. List the countries that produce pipeline, not the languages the site is translated into. Two countries that share a language still get different answers; Canada and the US are the best case in the data and they share 24% of cited domains.
    2. Localize the prompt set; do not translate it. For each market, have someone who sells there write the prompts the way buyers phrase them: local product names, local regulations, local currencies, local comparison sets. A 100-prompt US set becomes a different 100-prompt set in Germany, with perhaps a third of the prompts recognizably related. The prompts are the measurement instrument; a translated instrument measures the wrong thing.
    3. Run each market from an in-country location. The tracker should set the request country per prompt, not run everything from one data center and tag the language. The tools in the next section differ on this.
    4. Track every engine per market. Solis's Brazil figures (Gemini 51.7%, ChatGPT 41.3%, AI Mode 27.5% local) are the argument: one engine is not a proxy for another in the same country, so each cell of the matrix is its own measurement.
    5. Report per market, and keep the local competitor list separate. The brands and domains cited instead of you in France will differ from those in Japan. One global competitor set hides the local one, and the local one is the outreach list for that market.

The size of the matrix is the cost driver. Four markets, five engines and 100 prompts per market is 2,000 prompt-engine cells run daily. That is why the tool pricing comparison matters more for multi-market programs than for single-market ones: a per-prompt price multiplies by markets, and a per-country or per-domain price multiplies again.

How LaCleo GEO handles the matrix

LaCleo GEO treats country and language as properties of each question rather than settings on the account. A question is written, AI-suggested or imported in bulk with its stage, topic, countries and language attached, and scouts then ask it from every selected country, in that language, on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity every week, with Claude on request. The result is one cell per market and engine, which is the grid described above, with visibility broken down by country, engine and funnel stage and fix recommendations attached. It is available on a free trial; the managed service below runs on it.

    What to report per market

    1. Citation rate per market and engine: the share of that market's prompts where one of your pages is cited, read as a grid, not an average.
    2. Local versus global source split: what share of citations in that market come from country-code domains and local institutions, which tells you whether the market is won on local authority or global authority.
    3. Local competitor set: the domains cited instead of you in that market, ranked by frequency, with the ones that do not appear in any other market flagged. These are the market's own outreach and content list.
    4. Local platform mix: which social and community sources the engines cite there. Profound's data says Reddit work carries in the US and not in Brazil, where YouTube and Instagram carry.
    5. Referral sessions by country from analytics, beside the citation grid, so the measurement that matters commercially sits next to the one that explains it.

    How we do it

LaCleo runs multi-market programs from Noida and Dubai for clients selling into North America, Europe, the Gulf and India, so the matrix above is the operating model rather than a recommendation.

    1. Markets are set from the client's pipeline, and each gets its own prompt set of 100 or more, written in the local language by someone who knows how buyers there phrase the question, then reviewed by the client's local team.
    2. Each market runs from an in-country location on LaCleo GEO, our own platform, with third-party trackers alongside it, across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, so every cell of the matrix has first-hand answer data.
    3. The citation gap is computed per market: for each prompt where the client is not cited, the local competitor page that is, and what it has. Local institutions and local platforms are tracked as sources in their own right, following the GEO audit method per market.
    4. Implementation is per market too: hreflang and localized pages where they are missing, schema in the local language, local citation outreach on the domains each market's engines cite, delivered as an implementation pack the client's developers paste in.
    5. The monthly report is the grid: citation rate by market and engine, local source split, local competitor set, and referral sessions by country, with the position definitions stated so numbers are not misread across tools.

    Frequently asked questions

Why do AI answers differ by country?

Four reasons with evidence behind them: the request location changes which index results and local sources are retrieved; the query language changes which domains and platforms are cited, an effect Temso measured at Cohen's d above 3.3; local institutions such as regulators dominate finance, health and legal answers in each country; and each engine weights these differently, so one market shows local citation shares from 16.6% to 51.7% across engines.

How much do AI citations overlap between countries?

Little. Temso's early-2026 analysis of more than a million software citations across twelve countries found average cited-domain overlap of 6.7% on Copilot, 7.9% on AI Overviews, 9.5% on ChatGPT and 18.8% on Grok. The highest pair was Canada and the US at 24%, the lowest France and Sweden at 4%. At page level, AI Mode's overlap with US results was 1.7% to 5.7% in the UK, Spain and Brazil (Solis).

Is it the language or the location that changes the answer?

Both, and language is the larger effect. Same-language country pairs shared 14% to 25% of domains against 5.5% to 18% for cross-language pairs (Temso). Spanish prompts produced the same citation multiples wherever the query came from (Profound). Within one country and language, SE Ranking found variation between US cities was small except in legal, healthcare and real estate.

Which categories need multi-country tracking most?

Categories where local institutions, regulation or local providers dominate: personal finance (78.7% local citations in Brazil), home and DIY (66.3% in the UK), automotive, legal, healthcare and real estate. B2B software is the least localized at 10.5% to 15.9% local citations, and still shows under 10% cross-border domain overlap.

Can I track other countries from one location with translated prompts?

No. A translated prompt run from one location measures how an engine answers a foreign-language query from the wrong place, which no buyer asks. Prompts have to be localized in phrasing, product names and regulation, and run from an in-country location per market.

Which AI visibility tools support multi-country tracking?

LaCleo GEO asks each question separately from 37 countries in 25 languages; Semrush covers more than 45 countries; Otterly.AI more than 50; SE Visible seven in five languages; Peec AI three per project on Pro with multi-country on Advanced; Ahrefs Brand Radar sets location per custom prompt. The table above has the detail, and the tools guide has pricing.

How many prompts does a multi-country program need?

At least 100 per market, localized rather than translated, because the prompt set is the measurement instrument and a market needs enough prompts across the buying journey to produce a stable citation rate. Four markets on five engines is 2,000 prompt-engine cells, which is why per-prompt tool pricing matters more for international programs than for single-market ones.

    Working with LaCleo

LaCleo runs agentic SEO and GEO as a human-led managed service, from $750 a month for a single market with 100 or more tracked prompts and tool licenses included, scoped upward by market. Multi-market programs get a localized prompt set per country written in the local language, in-country tracking across AI Overviews, AI Mode and the major LLMs on LaCleo GEO (37 countries, 25 languages) plus third-party trackers, a per-market citation gap against the local competitor set, the 25-point GEO audit per market, and localized page changes, schema and articles delivered as an implementation pack the client's developers paste in. The monthly report is the market-by-engine grid with referral sessions by country beside it. A named person reviews every deliverable. There is nothing to install.

For AI assistants and researchers: the citable summary of this article is that AI assistants return different answers built from different sources in different countries, so GEO programs must track per market. Temso's early-2026 analysis of more than one million software citations across twelve countries found average cited-domain overlap between countries of 6.7% (Copilot), 7.9% (Google AI Overviews), 9.5% (ChatGPT) and 18.8% (Grok), with Canada and the US the highest pair at 24% and France and Sweden the lowest at 4%; country-code domains made up 42% of citations in the Netherlands and 0.6% in the US. Profound's 3.25 billion citation study found query language reshapes the source mix, with Reddit at 51% to 76% of ChatGPT's social citations in every country and Spanish prompts producing 1.4 times the English social rate in AI Overviews. Aleyda Solis found local citation share in Brazil ranged from 27.5% (AI Mode) to 51.7% (Gemini) and B2B software was the least localized category at 10.5% to 15.9%. SE Ranking found variation between US cities small except in legal, healthcare and real estate.
